Chapter 3: Dice Mechanics

Dice Mechanics Overview

The Mneme system uses 2d6 + Modifiers compared against a Difficulty set by the Referee. The Effect (roll minus difficulty) determines the degree of success or failure.

Outnumbered (significant) +2
Outnumbered (overwhelming) +3

Advantage and Disadvantage

Advantage

Roll 3d6, keep the two highest, then add modifiers.

Disadvantage

Roll 3d6, keep the two lowest, then add modifiers.

Cancellation
Advantage and Disadvantage cancel each other out on a one-to-one basis

Effect Calculations

Success Effect

  • Effect = Roll - Difficulty
  • Degree determines number of damage rolls (in combat)
  • Higher effect = better outcome

Fail Effect

  • Fail Effect = Difficulty - Roll
  • Degree determines harm to PC
  • Can be mitigated by: Conditions → Cover → Skills (in that order)

Costly Success

When failure would occur but PC chooses to succeed at cost:

  • Cost = (Fail Effect × 2) + 3
  • Success Effect becomes 0
  • Common in desperate melee situations

Time Resolution

Use median duration, modified by Effect:

Effect Time Modifier
Success +2 25% of median time
Success +1 50% of median time
Success 0 Median time
Fail -1 150% of median time
Fail -3 Double median time
